Hi all,

Gutworm - Ruin The Memory (Anticulture).
Impressive debut album from one of Britain's brightest new hopes.
Eight seconds of opener 'What You Are' is all that's needed to realise why one Hammer scribe calls Gutworm 'the heaviest thing I ever heard'. Crushing static shock white noise and blast-beat drumming rag each other in a clenched fist thrashpit against a vocal track that sounds like it was laid down by the Dark Lord Satan himself. It's the sound of evil incarnate baby, and we likes it lots!
That's not to say there's no control going on, Gutworm entwine heavy grooves with white knuckle aggression - see 'Below Within' - while 'Twisted' is a barbaric slude-infested frenzy. These Northampton bruisers have already backed Nile and Testament as well as gaining high praise in the British metal community. If 'Ruin The Memory' is anything to go by, roll on the next one. 8/10 METAL HAMMER

Gutworm - Ruin The Memory (Anticulture)
Traditionally, built-up towns, booze and bleak prospects have made for great bands. Take Stoke's Charger, Liverpool grind legends Carcass, Shropshire's Godflesh and Swansea's Black Eye Riot. Well, things can't be all that rosy up in Northamptonshire if Gutworm's ear-shredding chugathon is anything to go by. So hefty you'd need a forklift to jack it up, Gutworm's second effort comes after a course of bad luck (which saw their debut shelved, never to be released). Frankly it's no surprise these boys are not only trying to 'Ruin The Memory' - they're attempting to blow it to oblivion through a succession of savoury riffs, and nodule-inducing, larynx-scraping vocals. Check out hte livid 'Loveless', with more bottom-end than the contestants of Celebrity Fit Club and inhuman, fast-as-fuck drumming, and the blast-furnace of 'Incineration', which could easily take on the Relapse heavyweights. The 'Worm has definitely turned. 8/10 ROCK SOUND

GUTWORM

Hello again everyone,
Sorry it's been so long since the last update but lots of different problems cropped up!
Firstly before I update you with what the Mighty war horse that is Gutworm have been/are up to,
I would like everyone who wishes to stay on this mailing list, to please reply to this e-mail by simply putting 'GUTWORM RULE.' That's all you have to do, this will weed out the uninterested and those people who never read this news letter anyway and we will keep the true fans!
Right now to business!
News flash about the Gutworm album, Due to a difference of musical & professional opinions & views, Gutworm are terminating their contract with Cultural Minorities & SPV.
Gutworm have returned to being an unsigned band! Due to this they have lost a lot of valuable time waiting for the release of the album they recorded 18 months ago and have fought hard to get it released with no success!
Now as many of you probably know the last time Gutworm released any recorded material it was back in the early part of 2000, which they sold out of by 2001. So taking this into consideration, Gutworm have decided to record and release the album independently and have booked themselves into a studio for mid Nov to re-record the album that never was and do it the way it should've been done originally!
Gutworm hope to get the recording pressed and out by early 2004, keep an eye on the web site and on the news letters!!!!!!
Gutworm have a busy schedule of shows coming up with more being added every week. Some shows have already gone and I apologise to all the people who could've made it to those shows but were unaware of them!

Viking Skull, Ritual of Hate, Otis. Northampton Soundhaus, 12 september 2003. [13 Sep 2003|06:15pm]

ex_skyward540
Otis: quality melodic rock with a really heavy edge. They name Tool, Pink Floyd, and Dream Theater as influences and it really shows. Ones to watch, for sure.
7/10.

Ritual of Hate: It's been a year or so now since the band have finalised their lineup, and this gig has proved that they've finally got it right. The mix was excellent, the playing impressively tight, and the whole set exuded sheer confidence. Influences include Strapping Young Lad, Slayer, Soilent Green, Vision of Disorder an Will Haven. The set started very well and certainly drew their fair share of punters away from the bar. Unfortunately there were a few minor technical problems, but these were quickly sorted out and the last few songs were positively electrifying. 'Remnants of Bad Days'in particular stood out, its melodic guitar line intensifying rather than diluting the impact of the vocals. This was passionate, go for the throat, balls out metal. Their sound updates on thrash, sludge and speed metal and makes it new and fresh. Fantastic.
9.5/10

Setlist: Ritual of Hate, Angerjuice, Pessimist, Thanatos, Remnants of Bad Days, Before the Fall, We Write Our future in Letters Of Fire, The Symbolic Crucifixion of Hedonism.

Viking Skull: First impressions, it must be said, were not good. They sounded completely at odds with the rest of the bill, and I must admit I have little sympathy with a band this young who sound so retro they appear to be a greatest hits of their dads record collection. Think Motorhead, AC/DC, ZZ Top, Lynrd Skynrd, and a hell of a lot of Steppenwolf. They are definitely growers though, their enthusiasm was infectious. This is scuzzy retro rock to get drunk to. There was nothing new here, but they were easy on the ear, and manage to sound completely unlike what you would expect from a Raging Speedhorn side project. Thoroughly enjoyable, apart from an ill advised version of 'Crazy Horses' by the Osmonds. If you want a good time 70's style biker rock band with lyrics about hot women, bikes, skulls and whiskey then this lot are for you. If you want something experimental and avant garde, you're not going to like it. Thoroughly enjoyable.
8/10.

Setlist: Punisher, Skulls & Whiskey, Dirty Hole, Crazy Trucker, Frostbite, Double or Quits, Injector, Black Diamond, Beers+Drugs+Bitches

i've been asked to help fill up this community by doing a review.. gutworm just over a month ago (it was a friday) there was a band called mab on quite early, four girls from italy.. couldn't see the drummer, but the guitarist and bassist both looked like they wanted to be in queen adreena with the dreads of the twins from matrix reloaded. the singer looked a bit out of place, manicured gothic.. but it all sounded good; quite heavy but the vocals were really powerful and odd.. wail, scream etc sounds a bit pathetic.. i can't think of the right word. but it was good. very melodic, makes you feel proud to be female kinda music. plus mab is some mythical chick who slept with a load of guys wihtout them knowing.. *looks it up* ermm... the midwife of the faries who delivered men's brains?! ok.. anyway, she had a chariot and aubrey beardsley drew her a couple of times..
gutworm were gutworm. i'd never seen them before.. had a stinking hangover at the time, it being the night after the night before. i thought neil was trying to be amusing, but apparently he really had forgotton all the names of the songs as every one seemed to be called Under A Glass Moon. i liked their tattoos. well, and their music. even though it hurt me lots. i would go and see them again if i had the chance. and amneh likes them. don't know if that's a recommendation really though.. hell, i like her taste in music so why not.
wish i could remember who else played that night, but as i said, i really wasn't in a good state.
